Homstel Log Inn in Skopje, Macedonia (Review)
It was my first time visiting Skopje and I wasn’t too sure where to stay. Eventually went for this ho(s)tel because of the location, affordable rates, and its character.
Location
Log Inn is conveniently located within 15 minutes’ walk from both the bus and train station, and the Old Bazaar in the other direction. Macedonia Square and the “new” part of town are a pleasant 20-minute stroll down the River Vardar. A big shopping mall, Vero, is also less than 10 minutes away. The surrounding area may not be very inviting, especially after dark, but it’s quiet, with a park on one side and the river on the other.
As it says on the website, the place is maintained “in the spirit of the youth, music, culture and art”, which is right up my street. In fact, it shares the building with the Youth Cultural Centre. And possibly also a brothel, which would explain the prostitute who approached me outside! 😃
There are 12 rooms which range from 6‑bed dorms to a spacious family mini-studio. All are decorated with character, mostly with images of famous rock stars. I requested the David Bowie room, but it was already booked. I’m not surprised! Instead, I got the one with Bernays Propaganda, a Macedonian post-punk group, which was fine.
My experience
The host is so friendly! I needed somewhere to work after the check-out and he let me use the communal kitchen as the office for the day. He then made me tea and offered some fruit!
Is there anything I didn’t like? Wi-Fi could be faster and there wasn’t much to the view from my window. It looked out on a long roof which blocked an otherwise pleasant surroundings. The bathroom could do with a little refresh, but all in all, everywhere was very clean and well looked-after.
Somehow, I didn’t get to take good footage during my stay there. All photos here are from Log Inn’s official Facebook and website (linked below).
