Sevilla Kitsch Hostel Art Review
Some would cringe at a hostel with the word âkitschâ in the name. But it couldnât be a better bait for me! đ
Price and Location
I had two nights to spend in Seville. Torn between two hostels, I decided to book a night in each and compare. Although not as good as La Flamenka, Kitsch Art was worth the stay, if only cost-wise. For a bed in a four-person dorm youâll pay just under 20 euros, and a private double room is around 66. For this location, slap bang in the middle of Spainâs 3rd most popular city, such rates are more than attractive.
My favourite thing about this hostel was the location â right in the Old Town, the charming Santa Cruz. Most of the main tourist attractions are nearby, like the AlcĂĄzar and Torre del Oro. Plaza de España is not a long stroll away either. The Cathedral is so close that you get a clear view of it from the rooftop terrace â a big asset of the hostel. It was very peaceful the morning I visited, but I imagine that in the evenings, it transforms into a lively hangout spot where the guests socialize.
The DĂ©cor
Ever since it opened its doors in 2015, this 2âstar hostel lives up to its name. Bright, cheerful dĂ©cor starts at the reception level, and gets better the further you go. Provocative murals by Spanish street artist Harfo adorn the staircase, blending religion and pop culture. First, thereâs Spanish singer Alaska depicted as Our Lady of Guadalupe. Later, Elvis Presley with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. A flight of rainbow stairs then leads you to David Bowie dressed as a pope!
In the bathrooms, you will you see vacation-inspired graffiti and Masonic symbols side by side. Vibrant patterns and wallpapers are omnipresent, including all 20 rooms. Kitsch Art boasts about being âthe most colourful hostel in Sevilleâ on its Instagram page, and itâs not a lie! Sensory overload to some, but a trippy paradise to many others!
What I didnât like
The staff were very friendly, but it would have been nice to be given a brief tour of the place, which seems a standard in good hostels. Also, two lockers in my room were missing doors and I had nowhere to store my valuables. I was only staying there for one night, so it didnât bother me that much, but it was disappointing. These flaws aside, I really recommend it when youâre in Seville.
